Twitter verified an account for a fake Congressional candidate created by a high school student to test the company's efforts on election accountability, according to a new report from CNN. Twitter grants blue checkmarks to certain accounts certifying that an "account of public interest is authentic," according to the company. Twitter said last year that it would try to verify the accounts of primary candidates for US national office, in an effort to level the playing field between incumbents and challengers. The fake account was suspended once CNN notified Twitter, CNN said in its report.
And while the fake candidate was able to get verification from Twitter, actual candidates have had more difficulty. A report from The Hill this week found that many candidates running in the upcoming primaries have not been able to complete the verification process.
