The sale of the institution that registers .org domains to a for-profit has caused alarm in some circles, with worries that it will open the space up to bad actors. But as this New York Times opinion piece points out, the .org domain was already an "open" domain, freely available to anyone who wanted one. As the article points out, "there are over 10 million dot-orgs, ... all you have to do to get one is fill out an online form and provide payment."
