Teaching Students Skills to Assess News Spread via Social Media

by Katherine Steiger on 2018-10-31T13:16:00-04:00 | Comments

Many of us -- particularly teens --  are getting a large amount of news via social media. The September/October 2018 issue of Knowledge Quest, a publication of the American Association of School Librarians, contains an interesting article about teaching students heuristics -- rules of thumb -- for determining the credibility of news spread through social media posts. Of special interest to librarians, the article contains an outline for presenting professional development to teachers on this topic. The article was written by Spencer T. Johnson and Ann Dutton Ewbank, both affiliated with Montana Stat University which hosts the full-text article here.
